Any whisky or wine connoisseur knows the difference between a quality drink and one that’s low budget. There are reasons top shelf liquor commands higher prices and one of those reasons is the time it takes to make the better brands.

To make your own liquor, you can start with your favorite whisky or tequila and simply cork it in a new whisky barrel for a few weeks. Our oak whisky barrels are small enough that the surface area encounters more of the liquor inside, accelerating the process.

This shows that the smaller 2L size barrel has 9 times (0.46 ÷ 0.05 = 9.2) the Surface Area to Volume Ratio compared to the 200L size commercial barrel. This means higher proportion of alcohol comes in contact with the charred surface and thereby ages a lot faster.

My Whisky Barrel is held together by pressure of the swelling wood and surrounding hoops, not glue or nails.

Before using the barrel for the first time, you need to cure it with the following steps:

  1. Remove the bung, close the spigot and pour water in to the barrel until it fills up.
  2. Let it sit until the wood swells and the barrel stops leaking (This may take from a few hours to a few days).
  3. Drain the filled water and rinse it with hot water to remove any loose wood chips from inside the barrel.
  4. Your barrel is ready to age your drink. Fill it with your favorite spirit and replace the bung.
  5. Taste the liquor every 1-2 weeks until you have it to your liking. Cheers! Bottle the contents and start another batch.

If you do not have any alcoholic beverage to age, it is necessary that you fill it with water to avoid dehydration of the wood.
